Papyrus hunting in Israel - Lake Agamon, 8 July 2016

Skirting Lake Agamon, Papyrus was abundant.  This Papyrus is a mixture of spontaneous re-establishment and several deliberate plantings (from Israeli stock).

Lake Agamon’s creation in 1994, was propelled by a desire to limit the impacts of the issues arising from the earlier large scale drainage of the valley.  These issues included, as mentioned previously, an excessive release of nitrates, but also subsidence, up to 2m in some areas, wind-blown peat released by erosion, and underground fires in the susceptible, dry peat.  Development of an eco-tourism industry was a positive reason for the creation of the 100ha lake and 90km of adjacent canals. Numerous other previously common species of the Hula Valley were also re-introduced and / or re-occurred spontaneously as a result of this habitat restoration project.
